Sun Protection for Babies & Children
Infants (<1-year-old) and toddlers (1-3 years old) have lesser levels of melanin for protection, a thinner outer epidermal stratum corneum and a higher surface area/body mass ratio. (Paller et al., 2011)
All these factors make their skin more vulnerable to sun damage. Hence the AAP & FDA recommend keeping infants away from direct sunlight as much as possible during the first 6 months.
It is also recommended to use physical barriers as much as possible, like a hat and scarf, as widespread use of sunscreen could cause rashes or sensitisation. However whenever necessary in smaller and for sensitive areas of the body like the nose, tops of the ears, cheeks and shoulders, the AAP recommends the use of a barrier or mineral (inorganic) sunscreen containing Zinc Oxide or Titanium Dioxide. (American Academy of Pediatrics, 2021) As inorganic filters penetrate much lesser into the skin than organic filters, (Cross et al., 2007) combined with their visibility, ensures parents apply a more even layer on the skin too.

HOW TO APPLY

Apply to skin in generous amounts over all exposed areas 20 minutes before sun exposure

Every 2 hours and/or immediately after sweating, swimming, or toweling

Dispense onto fingertips/palms and press hands together to spread the cream then smooth gently over the skin and pat in any residual cream
