Indian sandalwood is one of the world’s rarest fine fragrance ingredients.
The scent of Indian sandalwood has served as a spiritual accompaniment for life’s journey from womb to tomb.
Living up to its legacy as ‘The King of Woods’, Indian sandalwood has captivated cultures for millennia, making its way across the Indian subcontinent to the Roman empire and leaving an enduring influence seen in the use of sandalwood not only in Hindu and Buddhist temples but Jewish synagogues and Catholic churches today.
SACRED RITUAL BACKED BY SCIENCE
The timeless tradition of weaving the scent of sandalwood into sacred ritual unfolds globally. The scent of sandalwood is believed to catalyse a connection to the divine, to calm the mind and encourage focus. Within Hindu temples, Indian sandalwood is mixed with turmeric and ash to form the ‘Tilaka’ between the eyebrows, a pursuit to open the third eye to wisdom.
Declared a ‘royal tree’ in 1792, Indian Sandalwood’s sacred properties are supported by a complex scientific composition of sesquiterpenes called alpha and beta santalols. When the scent of sandalwood is inhaled, the santalols enter the bloodstream and work to alleviate stress, promote sleep, enhance mental clarity and induce bliss.
SOURCING SUSTAINABLE INDIAN SANDALWOOD
Insatiable desire for its serene ambience, sublime scent and therapeutic versatility has seen this elusive aromatic grow rarer still with native forests in India, all but depleted.

From seedling to top-shelf, it is the purity of Heartwood’s provenance and process that makes our Indian sandalwood offering a natural ‘wonder’ of the wellness world.
