Four Things You Didn’t Know About Sustainability at Heartwood

It’s no secret that the beauty industry contributes its fair share of plastic. In fact, more than 120 billion units of packaging are produced by the global cosmetics industry each year and unfortunately much of this plastic waste ends up in landfill or in our oceans, harming marine life and polluting our water with microplastics.

That’s why recycling and reusing the packaging of our beauty products is essential to minimising our impact on the earth, and that’s why Heartwood is committed to taking a circular approach to sustainability.

WE ARE CLIMATE ACTIVE CERTIFIED FOR OUR BUSINESS OPERATIONS

Heartwood is leading the charge in sustainable beauty as one of the first clean beauty brands in Australia to be Climate Active Certified for its business operations.

Climate Active is a unique government backed program that enables businesses to measure, reduce and legitimately offset their carbon emissions. They provide one of the most rigorous carbon neutral certifications in the world, holding Australian businesses accountable for neutralising and continuing to reduce their emissions in the future.

Being a certified Climate Active organisation means that the carbon sources associated with keeping the Heartwood store up and running – electricity, fuel and transport, postage, water, and waste to name a few – are measured and reported so that we can accurately reduce and offset our outputs.

Long story short, it means we can offer consumers peace of mind that international best-practice standards have been used to evaluate and offset the carbon footprint from our business operations.

Circular Sustainability at Heartwood

Sustainability is at the heart of what we do here at Heartwood – from plantation to top-shelf. Our ambition is to create the most effective, beautiful products whilst contributing positively to our environment and community, so we can all feel good about the skincare and beauty products we’re investing in.

By taking on a sustainable circular concept, where packaging is reused or responsibly recycled, we can do just that: give back to our environment, while also giving back to ourselves.

How it works

Once you’ve finished enjoying a Heartwood branded product, you can come into our Cottesloe store and take advantage of our Refill Rebate. We will refill your Heartwood product for 10 per cent off the original retail price, making it a no-brainer when it comes to restocking your holy grail Heartwood products. Can’t make it in-store? You can contact us at woody@heartwoodco.com.au to request a shipping slip.

If the packaging is damaged in any way, we also have the option to recycle through our recycling partner, TerraCycle.

Supporting brands that make a difference

As well as responsibly dealing with Heartwood-branded product packaging, we also make sure that the array of brands we stock do their best for the environment and community too.

For example, Australian brands such as Foile have a refill option for all their products, while Grown Alchemist has just released refill pouches for their hand and body products.

Hunter Lab and Kora have also released refill options for their face & body products which works out to be $10 cheaper, if not more, making it a great saving for you and for the environment.

Sourcing sustainably

Whenever you apply our Royal Oil or light one of our Indian Sandalwood Incense sticks, you can feel good about where our hero ingredient has been sourced.

One of the world’s only sustainable sources of the sacred, and threatened, Indian sandalwood tree, our plantations in the East Kimberley region employ efficient and eco-friendly farming practices where every part of the tree and all its bi-products are used.

With a lifespan of between 15 and 20 years, these incredible trees offset thousands of tonnes of carbon before being steam-distilled with purified rainwater for you to enjoy as skincare, fragrance and wellness products. Our plantations are also positioned to tap into one of Australia’s most abundant water resources, ensuring the water that supports local ecosystems aren’t depleted.
